Refinery29 commissioned me for an illustration for their SecondGen series. The piece explored a compelling idea: We often hear about what having immigrant parents deprives Second-gen Canadians of—i.e., social, political, and financial capital—but what about the gifts that come from growing up in two (or more) cultures? I illustrated Sadiya Ansari’s essay: My Immigrant Parents Knew Everything Wasn’t in Their Reach—But They Made Sure It Was in Mine.
Approach
Two lines from the essay became the inspiration for the visual direction: “They made sure it was in mine” and "While they shouldn’t have had to deal with depressed wages or casual racism either, their sacrifices paved the way for my generation to stand a little bit taller, and ask for more."
I wanted to capture that duality through the main character design. Her contemporary Western styling is paired with Pakistani jewellery and traditional markings, allowing both sides of her identity to coexist.
The hands reaching toward her became a visual representation of her parents’ hopes and sacrifices—the foundation that allows the next generation to reach further than they could themselves.
Working closely with Refinery29 Art Director, Yazmin Butcher, I created the illustration to feel vibrant, confident, and celebratory.
