ArriveCAN is a digital application that helps travellers save time at the border by submitting their customs and immigration declarations in advance. Launched in April 2020 as part of the federal government’s COVID-19 response, it let travellers enter Canada by submitting travel documents and customs declarations electronically. I joined the project as the Lead UI/UX Designer, working alongside Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) to design the mobile and web experience.

Approach

The biggest challenge was the project's evolving scope: We knew that new features and requirements would be needed as the situation changed. Looking back, I’m amazed at how the initial concept evolved into what it is today. I focused on creating a clean, modern visual foundation that could grow with the project. From there, I worked to ensure the UI/UX was user-friendly and accessible for the different range of travellers.

We worked closely with accessibility experts throughout the project, and their feedback pushed us to think more carefully about how people with different needs would interact with the experience.

It’s hands down the project in my career that has humbled me and taught me the most.
